What is an ITIN?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number provided by the IRS to individuals who are required to file a U.S. federal tax return but do not qualify for a Social Security number.

Understanding ITIN

Individuals who are required to file a federal tax return but are not eligible for a Social Security Number must apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) through the IRS. While this may appear straightforward, the application and renewal process can often be complicated. In addition, under the PATH Act, ITINs that haven’t been used on a tax return for the past three consecutive years must be renewed before submitting a new return.”

ITIN RENEWALS

ITINs that have not been used on a federal income tax return for tax years 2019, 2020, or 2022 are set to expire on December 31, 2023. Additionally, any ITINs with the middle digits ’88’ (e.g., 9XX-88-XXXX) will also expire at the end of the year. ITINs with middle digits 90 through 99—excluding 93—that were issued before 2013 and have not been previously renewed are also scheduled to expire on the same date.
