What is an ITIN?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a United States tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service for those who need to file a federal tax return but aren’t eligible for a Social Security number.

Understanding ITIN

If you need to file a federal tax return, but are not eligible for a Social Security Number, you must obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) from the IRS. Although it sounds simple, the ITIN process can be complex.
Also, with new requirements under the PATH Act, taxpayers who have not used an ITIN on a tax return in the last three years must renew their tax ID number before filing a tax return.

ITIN RENEWALS

All ITINs not used on a federal income tax return at least once for tax years 2019, 2020, or 2022 will expire on December 31, 2023. Additionally, all ITINs with middle digits 88 (For example: 9NN-88-NNNN) will expire at the end of this year. Those with middle digits 90, 91, 92, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98 or 99, that were assigned before 2013 and have not already been renewed, will also expire at the end of this year.
